The Cochlear Implant Section at Karolinska University Hospital is a highly specialised unit responsible for investigation, surgery, adaptation and follow-up of children and adults with cochlear implants. A cochlear implant, or CI as it is often abbreviated, is an audiological aid capable of improving the hearing of many profoundly hearing impaired and deaf individuals who receive very limited benefit from ordinary hearing aids.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital offers broad-based competence in all types of implant treatment.
With the development of osseointegrated (bone-anchored) titanium implants, primarily through the pioneering work of Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, excellent treatment outcomes have been achieved in the treatment of various forms of dental loss.
In certain situations, transplantation of bone and/or soft tissue may be required to obtain stable implantation with a good aesthetic result.
Osseointegrated implants can also be successfully used to anchor mandibular and facial prostheses in so-called reconstructive surgery after accidents and cancer treatment. Even congenitally missing tooth buds can often be replaced by titanium implants.
The treatment is carried out in collaboration with specialists in oral prosthetics with long experience of tooth replacement on implants.

Gamma Knife® surgery, sometimes referred to as stereotactic radiosurgery, is a non-invasive method for treating brain disorders. It is the delivery of a single high dose of irradiation to a small and precisely located intra-cranial mass through the intact skull. The Gamma Knife was invented by Professor Lars Leksell of Karolinska University Hospital, in 1968. Today it is the standard of care for neurosurgery, with thousands of published papers on treatment efficacy, improved quality of life for patients and enhanced efficiency, among other things. The method is unique and indispensable.

The Neuroradiology Clinic at Karolinska University Hospital has a special focus on investigations by computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, cerebral angiography and conventional radiology. A new advanced whole body camera at Karolinska University Hospital combines PET and CT technology, making more reliable diagnosis and treatment possible for thousands of cancer patients. The examination is also fast and easy on the patient.
As a method of investigation, MRI is very appropriate in many situations and emits no harmful radiation. To some patients the conventional MRI cameras, or closed tunnel cameras, are frightening and therefore cannot always be used. Aleris Radiology at Sabbatsberg Local Hospital in 2006 installed the first open high-field magnetic camera in Scandinavia. Image quality with the new open camera is equivalent to that of tunnel-type cameras. The open MRI camera is very appropriate, and may sometime be the only alternative, for patients who have difficulty tolerating confined spaces, for the obese, and for examination of children.

The Department of Neurosurgery at Karolinska University Hospital is Sweden´s largest , with 320 employees. In addition to common forms of neurosurgery, they have access to two gamma knifes and maintain close cooperation with the neuroradiology unit for interventional neurosurgery. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation involves transplanting healthy blood-forming cells from one individual to another. Most patients who undergo transplantation have leukaemia (blood cancer). In some cases, other malignant blood diseases and cancer of the lymphatic glands can also be treated by stem cell transplantation. Other curable diseases are severe aplastic anaemia, combined immune deficiency diseases and certain rare hereditary metabolic disorders. At the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, over 1,000 patients have undergone this treatment since 1975. The outcomes of stem cell transplantation at the hospital stand up very well in an international comparison.

Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) was developed at the Karolinska University Hospital in 1991 and the method has been refined over the subsequent years. Today there is a unique clinical experience of this treatment method at Karolinska. SBRT has been shown to be suitable for moderately large, well defined tumours of the thorax and abdomen which for various reasons are not planned for surgical tumour resection. The treatments are given with a high geometrical accuracy as a high dose in a short time period.
